BASIC INFO

DWRP Icons is an icon community that is meant to be an easily searchable location for fandom icons for DWRP in the way icon sources like pb_updates are for live action PBs.

The comm is organized using both the comm's tags and the memories. Tags can be used to search by fandom and the memories can be used to search by character. The mod will update the memories/character list on a rolling basis. Please see the Posting/Navigation guide at the bottom of this entry to see the ways the comm can be searched and how posts should be formatted.

RULES

1. DON'T BE A DICK.
This is an icon comm. These are 100x100 pixel squares used for pretending to be fictional character on the internet and there likely won't even be a lot of discussion in the comm. Since there is pretty much absolutely no reason to wank over icons, there will be a pretty low tolerance threshold for anyone being a jerk. Therefore, there will be no warnings or strikes, if you're rude when talking to someone else, you're out. Keep it polite, folks. Anon is currently on to allow for people to report things without any pressure but threads will be frozen if they become a problem and anon may be turned off in the future if it's being abused.

2. ALL ICON POSTS MUST BE POSTS WITH FANDOM ICONS
Stock photo icons, actor/celebrity icons (unless included with icons of that actor as a character), or other icons that aren't for characters will have their posts deleted without warning. The only exception will be actor icons if they're part of a character icon set and if the post fits the 50% rule in Rule 3 below. While fanart icons are a thorny issue, they will also be allowed since there are differing opinions on using them, but the poster must credit the artist.

3. ALL POSTS MUST HAVE AT LEAST 50% FANDOM ICONS
For any posts that have icons of the actors of the character (for example, an icon set that has photos of Robert Downey Jr. at press events alongside icons from the Iron Man movies) at least 50% of the icons must be from the actual movie/show/etc and nothing will be tagged or indexed in the memories by actor. There are sites like pb_updates for that. This icon comm is meant to be more geared towards finding icons for the characters themselves.

4. NSFW ICONS ARE ALLOWED BUT ALL NSFW ICONS MUST BE UNDER THE CUT AND HAVE A WARNING IN THE POST.
Self-explanatory. Also, please refrain from posting NSFW icons of minor characters.

5. ALL POSTS MUST HAVE ICONS AND YOU MUST BE THE ICON CREATOR.
Posts that don't have icons or don't link to icons will be deleted. If someone comes to the mod with a complaint that you've ripped off an icon set from the original creator and are trying to pass it off as your own, and it's very clear from looking at the two icon sets that you did (such as having the exact same crops, exact same coloring, etc etc), your post will be deleted and you will be banned. That's silly, don't do it.

6. FOLLOW THE POSTING FORMAT.
Any posts that don't include the template or are missing important info (like full character names) will be deleted without warning. Posts without cut tags will be deleted without warning so make sure you have your icons under a cut. (You'll only receive warning if the HTML is borked and it's clear you tried to cut it). Posts that don't obey the limits for how many icons are outside the cut will be deleted without warning. The posting format is needed for multiple things, like making the comm easily readable, making it easier to search for icons, making it easier for the mod to index posts for the memories, etc. so the mod will be pretty strict about it.

Also, please limit posts to five characters per post to dwrp_icons as this is the limit of how many characters can be indexed using the Memories. Posts that go over the limit will not be deleted but they will not be indexed by character.

7. IF YOU ARE THE FIRST TO POST FOR A FANDOM, REQUEST A FANDOM TAG.
If you do not request a new fandom tag, the post will go untagged and the mod will not index the characters in the memories, effectively making the post impossible to find by anyone looking.

8. DO NOT FRIENDSLOCK LINKED POSTS.
You may post the icons directly to the comm or post links and fake cuts to icons in a separate icon or personal journal, Tumblr post, etc. However, this comm is meant to have a long-term, easily searchable icon resource so if you post a link to another location where the icons are located, that entry or page must remain open or unlocked permanently or the corresponding post linking to it in the comm will be deleted if it's reported or seen by the mod. Everyone hates finding an icon set that they have to friend someone to access. Don't be that guy.

9. PUT SPOILER ICONS UNDER THE CUT.
Please put icons with serious spoilers (like a character death) under the cut instead of as your example icons and warn for them. Spoilers will be counted as spoilers for 3 months after the original release/air-date.

10. CONSIDER COMMENTING.
Okay this one's not actually a rule, but if you're picking up some icons, please consider commenting to let the icon maker know. Nobody can twist your arm to, naturally, but that way they'll know that they made someone out there happy! This comm will hopefully be used as a nice centralized place for RP icons and the more people talk to each other, the more likely icon makers will have ideas on what people out there are looking for.

NAVIGATION GUIDE

Navigation of the comm is fairly easy. Posts can be searched by fandom in the tags and by character in the memories.

By Character: SEARCH MEMORIES BY CHARACTER

You can use your browser's search option to search for specific character names or other terms on a page. (Usually ctrl+F)

There are also tags for things like "season 1," "season 2," etc for TV shows. To search two tags at once, such as a fandom tag and a season, you can use this shortcut:

POSTING GUIDE

When posting, you must use the following header:

CANON: [This would be the specific movie/comic series, etc. Examples: "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," "Leverage," "Marvel Comics: The Runaways," "Fullmetal Alchemist: Manga"]
CHARACTERS: [Please use the full names of the characters (including code names for superheroes and titles for royals) so the mod can index them in the memories and make sure they have them indexed under the right character. For Eastern names, family name first and then given name is preferred. You can also put your icon counts for each character here]
ADDITIONAL INFO: [Any other info you want to include like season, issue of a comic/miniseries, descriptions like "demon!Dean," etc. Just delete or put N/A if it doesn't apply]
CREDIT TO: [The name or journal you'd like the icons to be credited to.]

You can include five teaser/example icons outside the cut. All other icons must be under a cut, no exceptions.

You can only include five characters per post to dwrp_icons, as this is the limit on how many categories you can put on a post in the memories. While this can be a little inconvenient when posting, this will allow the comm to use the memories system so that people can search for specific characters. If you post more than five characters, none of the characters will be indexed in the memories.

Please tag your posts with the appropriate fandom tag or request a new fandom tag if none exists yet.

can you use the comm to gather up icons other people did in one place as long as you list the credits for the icons? like for example if you did an icon set of karina lyle from tiger and bunny and you wanted to link to icons from lonelygambler/uncompact/synchros/etc.

or do they have to be 100% your original icons

I'm gonna say no. While it would be nice and convenient, you never know what the original icon maker might prefer, you know?

Some of them do want to cultivate followings and have people friend them and stuff so while I personally am fine with my icons being spread all over, some people might prefer to control where they post them and I think it's best to respect that.

That said, you could always point them towards the comm to see if they'd want to post the icon sets here themselves since it's pretty easy since they're allowed to just link to them.

So, I have an icon post in my community here with two different characters from two different canons. Should I post two different entries in dwrp_icons, one entry for each character+canon? All the other batches I've seen with multiple characters have all those characters from the same fandom. So I guess basically what I'm asking is if each post in dwrp_icons is limited to one canon per post, or if a post can have multiple canons as long as it doesn't exceed five characters total.

As long as it doesn't exceed five characters total, you can post a batch that has multiple canons in it. The tags system will allow them to be searchable by canon, and the memory system works in a way that you can search by each characters name and still find the post.

How does one list two characters from the same canon who have the same name? The most differentiation their names get in canon is a nickname used once as a throwaway; one has a number of fandom nicknames.

I guess maybe one can be name / nickname and the other can be name / not nickname.

They'd be listed right near each other since they'd be the same name so that might work?

Hello! I wanted to do a general pimp post to tag all the series that have been posted to my icon comm in the past since I'm getting back into the swing of graphics, but there's been a lot of them so I wanted to ask if that was a generally OK thing to do! I know the memories system won't work well with it, but I figured at least if they're all tagged, people can poke through from the pimp post to the comm's tags links and find what they were looking for. They've all been larger posts so even if I did a post for each one (cries) they'd p.much all without fail exceed the chara tags limit haha whoops...

TL;DR I wanna make sure if anyone's looking for stuff I've done in the way way past they'll still be able to find it! Or if you have any suggestions / preferences for how you'd like me to handle something like that, please let me know. c: Thanks!

I'm interested in something similar, although I was thinking about just having something as simple as tags for different icon makers. Something like: "maker: username/community." So for me it would be "maker: ocarinas/sacredrealm" or people could identify with just their username or just their icon community name.

The downside is that using tags for icon makers decreases the amount of tags available for canons and such. Although I have no idea what DW's limit is for unique tags.

You can post more than the five characters just under the fandom tags and so on, but they just won't get indexed by character.

I just found this community and I love the idea of it, but it looks like it's stopped doing those second/fourth friday of the month posts -- is that done for good, or has it simply been due to mods being busy?

I'm curious because I'm an artist looking to draw icons for characters of all sorts and I'd love to have a resource to advertise my services! Since this might not be a place for it, do you have suggestions about where might be more active? RPanons ostensibly has a section, but any other suggestions would be really cool!

Sorry for the long delay in response to that. Had some major RL stuff go down.

The posts didn't really seem to attract much attention so I decided to opt out of doing them. I just need to change the comm info to reflect that.

Rpanons is the only other place I can think of. Tumblr also has an active rp community, though it's not centralized, but some people there would probs be willing to solicit your services drawing icons for OCs.

Good catch. Off the top of my head, I think I am sometimes a bit more careful on trying to check comic versions of characters. Did I get yours right, is your post from 616? Alternately, is Wanda different enough between comics universes to justify a 616 tag?

i've got an icon post for a canon that might be too obscure for a tag, for A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night. is there a catchall tag for obscure media, or should it get its own tag regardless of how often it gets used?

Hello! I'm sorry this is so late. If you haven't already posted (I am slowly catching up), there are a handful of "misc" tags for different mediums/genres - this one would fall under "movies: misc". This is because there is a limit of 1000 tags which I'm trying very hard not to hit.

I am going to err on the side of yes for characters who do not regularly change their hairstyles, since there may be some particularly spoiler averse people out there.

Which, if I am thinking of the right canon, I acknowledge puts you in a difficult situation for your previews - I'm thinking cut your example icons before your link to the full post?

Hey hey! I have a question. I've read the rules on this, but I'm still not 100% sure where I land on this, so I figured I'd check in. I'm working on an aesthetics post for the Barbie movie. Like not a random mood board that fits the movie's vibe, but an aesthetic/mood icon set with shots *from* the actual movie, including a few shots of Barbie (and a tiny few of Ken) alongside more aesthetic shots from the movie itself.
Based on your rules I'm currently assuming that while they're fandom icons, there might not be enough focus on character icons to be acceptable in this comm. Is that assumption correct or would you say such a set can be posted here? I'm just asking bc while I'd assume no, it also feels like enough of a fringe case that checking if it's a yay or nay on your end can't hurt.
